Flights Itinerary

About this trip

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The World Youth Day in 2023 will be in Portugal and I will be going with a group from our Diocese of Victoria. World Youth Days have been a great opportunity for young adults to see and hear Catholics from every continent and culture, all sharing our joy in Jesus Christ and the Church. This year our trip will include visits to Fatima,Portugal, and Spain to follow in the footsteps of St. Teresa of Avila.
We will all have an opportunity to deepen our faith! I invite you to consider participating with
Wendy Eggert, Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministry, and her Associate Director, Shannon Thomas, in this life changing pilgrimage with me!

Most Reverend Brendan J. Cahill

Day 09: Salamanca-Avila-Madrid – 08 AUGUST

After Breakfast at the hotel, we start our Day dedicated to St. Teresa. First stop will be in Alba de Tormes to visit the Church where St. Teresa is buried. Then we will continue to Avila, the city of St. Teresa. St. Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus, original name Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada, (born March 28, 1515, Ávila, Spain—died October 4, 1582, Alba de Tormes; canonized 1622; feast day October 15), Spanish nun, one of the great mystics and religious women of the Roman Catholic Church, and author of spiritual classics. She was the originator of the Carmelite Reform, which restored and emphasized the austerity and contemplative character of primitive Carmelite life. St. Teresa was elevated to doctor of the church in 1970 by Pope Paul VI. We will visit the medieval walls, 2.5km long, that are punctuated by 88 turrets and 9 gates, Puerta de San Vicente and Puerta de Alcázarbeing the most impressive of those guarding the Romanesque defensive rampart. You can walk along the entire perimeter of the city walls on the outer side. The apse of the Cathedral actually forms part of the walls, which reminds us of its defensive nature. The interior contains Romanesque sections, while the newer ones show a Gothic style. In fact, Ávila was among the first Castilian towns to use Gothic elements. We will have Mass in a local Church. Then after lunch, we will depart to Madrid. Check  into our hotel. Dinner and overnight in the capital city of Spain.

Day 10: Madrid – 09 AUGUST

This morning, we start our presentation of Madrid with a walking tour through the city. We will see the Royal Palace and the Sabatini Gardens which are next door. See the Royal Basilica of San Francisco el Grande. Later on, you will cross over the frantic Plaza de Cibeles, with its beautiful central fountain of the Roman Goddess Cybele. Looking out over the plaza is a colossal building, the Palacio de Comunicaciones and the Royal Basilica of San Francisco el Grande. Time at leisure to sightsee on your own. Dinner and overnight at our hotel.

Day 11: Madrid – USA – 11 AUGUST

This morning, we leave Madrid for our return flight(s) home, with the unforgettable images and memories of this experience of faith.
